This page contains the core open chords used in thousands of songs. These are the shapes we lean on heavily in the LLGS Level 1 course: A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, G.

Each chord link takes you to a dedicated diagram page using the LLGS style (with traditional fingering options where available), so you can see exactly which fingers go where and how to keep the load low on your hands.

Major open chords

A Major

Classic open A shape. Used in rock, pop, country, and blues.

C Major

Essential open chord for countless songs and progressions.

D Major

Bright, ringing open chord. Great for folk and rock strumming.

E Major

Big, powerful open chord. Forms the basis of many riffs and songs.

G Major

Huge open sound, a favourite for acoustic strumming.

Minor open chords

A Minor

Sad, melodic version of A. Pairs well with C and G progressions.

D Minor

Dark, dramatic chord. Great for moody progressions and melodies.

E Minor

One of the easiest chords to fret and a perfect starting point.
